Black Lives Matter

The year 2020 has seen monumental changes in the Black Lives Matter movement. On 25th May 2020 millions of people around the world witnessed the brutal murder of George Floyd by four police officers in Minneapolis. Many people were shocked and outraged by the injustice that they had seen happen to George Floyd and this sparked protests to happen not only in The United States of America but all around the world.

In the United Kingdom, thousands of people attended Black Lives Matter protests across hundreds of locations around the country, not only to stand in solidarity of the murder of George Floyd, but also for the injustice towards the Black community by the United Kingdom’s justice system. These protests brought many systemic racial issues to light that are present in the country. People were protesting for those who had been killed in British police custody and for those who were victims from the Windrush scandal as well as the families and people who lost their lives in the Grenfell Tower inferno.

There have been positive changes as a result of these protests. The Mayor of London has launched a scheme where there will be investigations into the history of statues to check their involvement in slavery. Also, many people are now educating themselves on Black history and the injustice that people have faced in the past and are still facing today. However, there is still a lot of progress yet to be made on the path to equality for all people.
