Week 3 Breakout task – subcultures

Our task for today was to talk about a subculture that we approve of and one that we do not approve of. Personally, I don’t feel as though I think negatively of any subcultures as I believe that being a part of a subculture is a large defining point of who somebody is and that it is wrong to disapprove of that. However, one subculture that I feel that I have very little interaction with is the Hip-Hop culture. As for a subculture that I ‘approve’ of, I would say that the subculture that I relate with and have felt apart of for a long time is the emo subculture.

I believe that people brand some subcultures or fandoms as good or bad based on their interactions with them. For example, if somebody feels like they can relate to or feels a sense of belonging with the people in a subculture, they are more likely to think positively of that subculture. Whereas if people have nothing in common with a subculture or if they have had confrontations with a subculture or fandom, then they are more likely to have a negative attitude towards it. Another way I believe that people view a subculture negatively is because of controversies or the behaviours that they have encouraged, either in the past or in the present.
